About this event
Premiere of the “Supplication Mass’ by Dr. Matthew Haakenson 7:30 PM, Monday, April 23 at Our Savior Lutheran Church, Wayne, NE (free admission) The Wayne State and Peru State College Concert Choirs will join forces with a string orchestra of musicians from Northeast Nebraska. Dr. Haakenson, the composer, is assistant professor of music at Wayne State College where he teaches music theory. He has been working on the mass since 2012 and this is the first performance of the 35 minute work. Haakenson composed the mass using the “soggetto cavato” technique. This compositional technique dates back to the Renaissance. Essentially, the vowels were extracted from the Latin term for supplication “Obsecratio.” The vowels were assigned scale degrees from Guido’s fixed “ut” system. The key signatures of the movements move in the order of the vowels from the Latin word. Most singers, players, and conductors rarely have the opportunity to perform an entire mass setting. The chance to perform a world premiere with the composer in residence makes this a unique and special event. It is a wonderful new work by a Nebraska composer, performed by many Nebraska musicians, in Wayne, Nebraska! There is no admission charge for the concert.
