About this event
Description:
“Love, Death, and Resurrection in the Musical Vision of Glass, Bond, Liszt, and Byzantine Chant” During the summer of 2017, Paul Barnes lost many close friends to cancer. One of the ways he processed his grief was developing this new lecture recital exploring the profound musical treatment of love and death in the music of Philip Glass, Victoria Bond, Franz Liszt, and byzantine chant. He has had the privilege of working with Philip Glass and Victoria Bond, as both composers have written multiple pieces for him, many based on byzantine chant. He has also specialized in Franz Liszt, most particularly in terms of religious symbolism in his piano music. Barnes is Marguerite Scribante Professor of Music at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. He teaches during the summer at the Vienna International Piano Academy and the Amalfi Coast Music Festival. In great demand as a pedagogue and clinician, Barnes has served as convention artist at several state MTNA conventions and was recently named “Teacher of the Year” by the Nebraska Music Teachers Association. Free and open to the public. This performance will also be live webcast.
