About this event
When Alan Reid appeared on public radio with Fiona Ritchie of “Thistle and Shamrock” to mark the 30th anniversary of her show, little did he know that his comment about touring in “every state in the US but four” would result in an invitation to check Nebraska off of his bucket list. Alan and fellow musician, Rob Van Sante will be on this historic tour in late March; 22nd in Gothenburg, 23rd at The Golden Husk in Ord and the 24th in Lincoln. Alan was a vital member of Battlefield Band from its inception in 1969 till his departure in 2010. In that time he toured all over the world and made almost 30 recordings with the band, working with such artists as Garrison Keillor, Van Morrison and Mike Oldfield. They won awards in Germany, Britain and the U.S. Throughout, Alan was at the heart of the band, his keyboards underpinning the bagpipes and the fiddle. Being the first to use keyboards as an integral part of a traditional folk band, Alan’s contribution to the band’s story has ensured its stature in Scottish culture as well as its influence on many of today's Celtic musicians. Alan’s contribution to the band’s story helped enshrine its stature in Scottish culture, as confirmed when the Battlefield Band was inaugurated into the Scots Traditional Music Hall of Fame in 2016. Alan’s singing has long been respected by his peers, illustrated when he was invited to participate in the Linn Recordings series on the complete works of Robert Burns. Moreover his song writing has grown in stature ever since the 1980s when his songs first appeared in the band repertoire, lyrical songs steeped in history, strong in storytelling and rich in melody. Rob was born in the Netherlands, but has lived most of his life in England. Rob’s first love has always been the guitar. From the 1970s onward, he toured extensively in Europe, North Africa and the Middle East, working with many stalwarts of the UK folk and jazz scene. In the early 90s he joined the Battlefield Band as their “fifth” member (sound engineer) and continued in that role until 2010. Alan & Rob present an evening of old and new music, featuring Alan's compositions, Battlefield Band favorites and songs from Rob. “The Dear Green Place” is the latest CD from the pair, released in 2017. The show combines lead and accompaniment guitar work from Rob, Alan's keyboard, guitar and accordion and fine harmony singing from both. Make history with Alan & Rob on Saturday, March 24 at New Visions Southminster Church (2915 S 16th St, Lincoln, NE 68502) at 7:00 pm (doors at 6:30 pm). Tickets available now; $15 in advance, $20 at the door. For more information, phone 402-742-0477 or Advance tickets:
