About this event
Century mark of Willa Cather’s My Ántonia celebrated with theatrical performance in Red Cloud (Red Cloud, Nebraska – Jan. 4, 2019) The 100th anniversary of the publication of My Ántonia, the seminal novel by Nebraska author Willa Cather, is marked by a touring theatrical production of the same name by acclaimed Minneapolis-based company, Illusion Theater. The tour will include performances in Lincoln, Kearney, Scottsbluff, and will conclude with a public performance at the Red Cloud Opera House on Tuesday, February 19th at 7:30pm. This production is presented by the Lied Center for Performing Arts as a part of their Arts Across Nebraska touring arts program, with the Willa Cather Foundation providing local support and educational resources. Published in 1918, My Ántonia is the final book in Cather’s “prairie trilogy,” which includes O Pioneers! and The Song of the Lark. The novel recounts the saga of Jim Burden, an orphan boy from Virginia, and Ántonia Shimerda, the eldest daughter of a family of Bohemian immigrants farming on the plains at the end of the 19th century. The story explores the relationships formed on the plains, as well as the challenges faced by immigrant homesteaders in Nebraska. The play My Ántonia is translated from the novel by playwright Allison Moores, and produced by the acclaimed Minneapolis theater company, Illusion Theater. The theatrical adaptation was developed during Illusion’s 2009 Fresh Ink Series, which won two Ivey Awards. This play brings to life the story of the land and the people who came to settle the Great Plains at the end of the 19th century. The play will be presented at the Red Cloud Opera House in partnership with the Willa Cather Foundation. This performance is sponsored by the Friends of Lied, the Nebraska Arts Council and Nebraska Cultural Endowment, and the Lied Center for Performing Arts and the Cather Foundation. For more information, visit About Arts Across Nebraska Arts Across Nebraska connects Lied artists to Nebraska communities throughout the state.
