ARTIST BIO Stephen is a nationally award-winning paper artist whose artworks are part of public and private collections around the world including the Minden Opera House and the JW Marriott Hotel-Grand Rapids. Stephen’s art medium is paper: Japanese handmade washi papers and origami sculptures that she invents. Stephen's intricate landscapes celebrate the beauty that is all around us. She teaches workshops on origami, Japanese culture, language and Japanese paper arts across the country. In 2020, she presented twice with the Minden Opera House "Empty Opera House" series. She is a member of Origami USA and the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) and SCBWI Nebraska chapter. A native of the Midwest, Stephen has traveled around the world and lived for more than six years in Japan. In 2020, she published her first picture book "The Day We Went to the Park" (Handersen Publishing). ORIGAMI ART PROCESS AND MATERIALS Origami is the Japanese art of folding squares of paper into representational shapes. Stephen's origami collages represent a new and unique approach to this ancient tradition. Stephen uses handcrafted papers, primarily those of Japanese origin, as her medium. Colors, patterns and textures found in the papers themselves, as well as those created through the folding process, are key design elements in my art. Hundreds of washi papers form her palette – from tissue-thin rice papers to vibrant patterned fabric papers. After choosing papers, she invents origami 3D paper sculptures that add shadow, give dimension and bring her work to life. To Stephen, origami is a metaphor for the potential that lies within each person. One sheet of paper, a seemingly simple material, through a multifaceted progression of paper-folds, can be transformed into almost anything. It can even be deconstructed – unfolded – in order to begin again. Please view more of her work at: or
