Description:
Lincoln, Neb., May 14, 2014 -- Now in its 23rd season, the Sheldon Art Association's Jazz in June concert series continues -- this year with the international music of Evening in Brazil, CALJE, Donna Singer and the Doug Richards Trio, and Susan Pereira and Sabor Brasil. Concerts take place each Tuesday in June at 7 p.m. in the sculpture garden west of the Sheldon Museum of Art, 12th and R streets on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln City Campus. Although the Jazz in June concert series is free, those in attendance are encouraged to make a donation of $10 per family to help ensure its continuation. This year's Jazz in June schedule: > June 3 -- Evening in Brazil; > June 10 -- CALJE: Chicago Afro-Latin Jazz Ensemble; > June 17 -- Donna Singer and the Doug Richards Trio; and > June 24 -- Susan Pereira and Sabor Brasil. Walking tours of campus gardens are offered at 6 p.m. each Tuesday in June by representatives of UNL Landscape Services, Lincoln Parks and Recreation, and Sheldon Museum of Art. Tour groups assemble at Sheldon's east entrance. For a great seat, come early with a blanket or lawn chair to mark your spot. For safety reasons, pets are not allowed at concerts. A market featuring 25 vendors with food, drinks and artisan-made crafts begins at 5 p.m. at 12th and R streets. UNL BikeValet offers free secure parking for bikes from 5 p.m. to an hour after each Jazz in June concert. Parking is at 13th and R streets at the east end of the Jazz in June market. Garden Tour: "Bees, Birds and Butterflies," a tour of the Love, Andrews and Burnett gardens with Mark Canney, park planner and garden designer for Lincoln Parks and Recreation. June 10, CALJE: Chicago Afro-Latin Jazz Ensemble: CALJE is a new and innovative force on the Latin Jazz scene. Garden Tour: "Amazing Annuals," a tour of the Love and Van Brunt Visitor Center gardens with Laurence Ballard, nursery supervisor, UNL Landscape Services. June 17, Donna Singer and the Doug Richards Trio: A featured performer on the Europe Jazz Network, Singer brings to Jazz in June a remarkable repertoire of jazz, swing, and rhythm and blues. She and the Doug Richards Trio -- bassist Doug Richards, keyboardist Billy Alfred and drummer Mike Cervone -- receive prominent airplay in Europe, Africa and North America. Garden Tour: "Trees and Shrubs for All Seasons," a tour of the newly planted areas near Architecture Hall Courtyard and Woods Art Building with Eileen Bergt, landscape architect and assistant director, UNL Landscape Services. June 24, Susan Pereira and Sabor Brasil: Sabor Brasil fuses traditional Brazilian styles with contemporary jazz. Founded in 1991 by vocalist, pianist, percussionist and composer Susan Pereira and drummer Vanderlei Pereira, the ensemble thrills audiences with a repertoire ranging from beloved Brazilian standards to original compositions influenced by MPB (musica popular brasileira), samba, bossa nova, chorinho and the exotic rhythms of Bahia. Garden Tour: "What’s New?" a tour of new, newly installed, and recently conserved works in the Sheldon Museum of Art sculpture garden with the museum's Sharon Kennedy, director of education, and Genevieve Ellerbee, associate registrar.
