North Korea detains 24-year-old American tourist seeking asylum
North Korea said on Friday it had detained a 24-year-old American tourist in April for what it said was “a gross violation of its legal order,” Reuters reports.
The country’s official KCNA news agency said that Miller Matthew Todd was detained on April 10 for his “rash behavior in the course of going through formalities for entry into the (Democratic People’s Republic of Korea) to tour it.”
KCNA said that Todd had a tourist visa for the DPRK, but tore it to pieces and shouted “I want asylum in North Korea — I want North Korea to be my shelter,” the KCNA said.
