‘Sesame Street’ Introduces New Character with Autism

LINCOLN, Neb. (March 31, 2017) – There’s a new Muppet friend living on Sesame Street. Julia is sweet, curious and loves to play. And she has autism. The “Sesame Street” special episode “Meet Julia” premieres at 10:30 a.m. CT, Monday, April 10, on NET.

Sesame Workshop, the non-profit educational organization behind “Sesame Street,” added the newest character to signal a strong, continuing commitment to the autism community. The addition of Julia comes with a release of resources designed to serve autistic children and their families and increase awareness and understanding of autism.

“Sesame Street and Autism: See Amazing in All Children” (autism.sesamestreet.org) is a nationwide initiative aimed at communities with children ages 2 to 5. Developed with input from parents, people who serve the autism community, and people with autism, it offers families ways to manage common challenges, to simplify everyday activities, and to grow connections and support from family, friends and community.

“Sesame Street and Autism: See Amazing in All Children” includes digital videos, books and e-books, with the collection available in both English and Spanish.

Among the many creators and contributors behind “Sesame Street and Autism: See Amazing in All Children,” Stacey Gordon, who performs the role of Julia, and Christine Ferraro, the writer of the “Meet Julia” episode, both have family relationships which helped them bring this character to life in a compelling, meaningful way.
