Program Offers Tips to Protect Seniors from Fraud, Scams

LINCOLN, Neb (June 8, 2017) – A new television program offers essential information for Nebraskans to address financial exploitation among the elderly and vulnerable.

“Protecting Senior and Vulnerable Nebraskans from Fraud, Abuse and Exploitation” will air on NET World (NET2) at 6:30 p.m. CT, Thursday, June 15, which is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.

It will repeat at 1 p.m., Sunday, June 18; 8 p.m., Thursday, June 29 and 2 p.m. Sunday, July 2 also on NET World (NET2). All times are central. The program will also be available to watch online at netNebraska.org.

The program features an expert panel covering four segments: frauds and scams, case investigations, diminished capacity and powers of attorney/agent responsibilities. It also identifies resources to find help and report suspected fraud, abuse and exploitation.

Panelists include Jim Hegarty, Better Business Bureau, Ryan Sothan, Nebraska Attorney General’s Office, Benjamin Kroeze, Adult Protective Services, Cindy Koenig-Warnke, Lincoln Police Department, Mary Christensen, Lincoln Medical Partnership and Mary Wilson, Buford Law Office. 

This expert panel will:

-- discuss common frauds and scams in Nebraska and tips to protect people from being victimized

-- discuss how to stop unwanted mail, place a security freeze on credit history and how to file a consumer complaint

-- describe the investigation of cases by law enforcement and Adult Protective Services in a court system

-- discuss how to spot symptoms of dementia and other conditions that diminish the capacity in a person which increases a person’s vulnerability for financial exploitation

-- provide tips on do’s and don’ts in executing financial powers of attorney and review the responsibilities of the agents of power of attorney
