‘Backyard Farmer’ Begins Its 65th Season April 6

LINCOLN, Neb. (March 29, 2017) – The popular lawn and garden television series “Backyard Farmer” returns to NET at 7 p.m. CT, Thursday, April 6. The season premiere will cover this winter’s unusual weather and its impact on the growing season, plus review how plants, landscapes and gardening have changed over the years.

The longest-running, locally-produced television series in the nation, “Backyard Farmer” is celebrating its 65th season and airs Thursdays on NET through September 14. The program was created by George Round, former University of Nebraska public relations director, Wayne Whitney, former Nebraska Extension horticulturist and Jack McBride, NET’s founding general manager. The format of answering viewer questions remains a cornerstone of the program's success.

Kim Todd, Nebraska Extension landscape horticulture specialist, returns as show host with other Nebraska Extension experts joining the panel. On the April 27th show, Mike Boehm, plant pathologist and vice chancellor of UNL’s Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources, will make a guest appearance and answer questions about plant diseases. To submit a question for the experts, viewers should visit byf.unl.edu.

Several television remotes are also planned including: Pioneer Village in Minden, (taped April 29 at 3 p.m. to air May 4); the Backyard Farmer Garden on UNL's East Campus, (taped June 17 at 10 a.m. to air June 22); and at the Nebraska State Fair in Grand Island (taped Aug. 30 to air Aug. 31). Those from the area are invited to be part of the television audience during the live taping at these locations.

Several special features are also planned this season including a segment about Nebraska hops and craft beer during the show April 27. The buy-local sentiment has created demand for Nebraska hops and this feature explores the craft brewing industry and its impact on agriculture commodities. Other special features will include a community garden in Hastings, a profile of long-time “Backyard Farmer” phone volunteer Gladys Jeurink, honey bees and other pollinators, beneficial ants and what to do with ash trees due to the emerald ash borer infestation.
