“Great American Read” Searches for America’s Favorite Novel

LINCOLN, Neb. (May 9, 2018) – What is your favorite book? A new PBS television series and multi-platform initiative, “The Great American Read,” celebrates the joy of reading and the books we love – and culminates in a nationwide vote for America’s number one novel.

“The Great American Read: Launch” premieres on NET, Nebraska PBS and NPR Stations, at 7 p.m. CT, on Tuesday, May 22. Hosted by journalist Meredith Vieira, the two-hour episode introduces the full list of America’s 100 favorite novels, selected in a demographically representative national survey. Celebrities, authors and everyday Americans will discuss books that influenced them and their significance in American popular culture.

The list of 100 favorite novels for the “Great American Read” spans five centuries, from “Don Quixote” (1603) to “Ghost” (2016). Authors from 15 different countries are represented, with genres ranging from beloved children’s classics such as “Charlotte’s Web” to modern best-sellers such as “Twilight.” The entire list of 100 is available at pbs.org/greatamericanread.

Voting for America’s favorite book opens with the launch of the two-hour premiere episode on May 22 and continues throughout the summer, leading up to the grand finale “favorite” announcement in October 2018. Viewers can vote at pbs.org/greatamericanread and through hashtag voting via Facebook and Twitter using #GreatReadPBS.

The summer months will also offer a multi-platform initiative, including social media components and national reading clubs. “The Great American Read” television series will resume in the fall with several themed episodes, including an exciting finale that culminates in the first-ever national vote to choose “America’s Best-Loved Novel.”  

To complement “The Great American Read,” over the summer PBS KIDS will host “PBS KIDS Read” as part of an annual summer learning initiative for children ages 2-8 and their families, encouraging reading and related activities through a variety of resources for kids and parents.

Whether it’s rediscovering an old favorite or engaging with a new title, “The Great American Read” encourages people to read as many novels as they can from the top 100 list, discuss them in forums such as virtual online book clubs and ultimately vote for their favorite.
