The War

Air Date: 01/01/2007

Although the landing at Normandy on D-Day (June 6, 1944) changed the direction of the war, there were still plenty of battles to be fought. Platoon Leader Francis Greenlief and the men of the Nebraska Guard's 134th took Hill 122 near Saint Lo, France, but at a great price. Pvt. Herman Genrich, 1st Lt. Francis Greenlief, 2nd Lt. Ray Carrol, and Maj. Sam Huston tell us what they saw as they landed on Omaha Beach on D-Day. They also describe the battle for Hill 122, the key to the liberation of the French town of Saint Lo. In a 1946 speech at the Nebraska State Fair, General Dwight D. Eisenhower (later President Eisenhower) praised the infantry, ". . . it participated so gallantly and effectively in the great battles of Normandy . . ." This segment is from the program All Hell Can't Stop Us produced in 1991.
