From 1986. Cattle ranching in the American West has given us some of the most appealing symbols of our national character, among them the hard-working, independent rancher. But today, hard work alone is not enough. Third and forth generation ranchers are learning that the traditional cow and calf ranches their grandfathers put together can't make a profit. Back at the Ranch is about the changes contemporary ranchers and their families must make in order to survive.
