The astronaut seed was planted at an early age for Clay. His mom recounts that it was during the Mercury and Gemini programs when Clay was 5 or 6, she decided to dress Clay in a spacesuit made of aluminum for an annual carnival and parade in town called the Stir-Up. Clay recounts that it was during the Apollo 8 mission that he decided that he wanted to be an astronaut when he grew up.
