Land of Their Own: The Homestead Dream
June 27, 1960
The Homestead Dream features the letters of Uriah and Mattie Oblinger and their homesteading in Custer County Nebraska in the 1870’s. This follows Uriah’s early days alone in Nebraska, securing the land, building the house. His wife Mattie joins him and they build the land and life together. She later dies in childbirth, a commonality on the plains. Photographs from the Solomon Butcher collection are featured.
