Nebraska Stories: The Blizzard of 1949, 503

January 12, 2014

A series of snowstorms between November 1948 and February 1949 stopped trains, buried houses, and threatened millions of cattle in four states. The Air Force launched Operation Haylift employing cargo planes to drop hay bales to hungry livestock. On the ground, the Army launched Operation Snowbound to reach stranded people.
