Chimney Rock... Chimney Rock... Chimney Rock...
[Narrator]
Eons ago, when the Platte River carved out this valley it left behind sentinels of time like the slender spire we call Chimney Rock. Chimney Rock is a natural formation composed of layers of clay and layers of volcanic ash, rising over 300 feet in what is now Western Nebraska.
“Echoes”
Chimney Rock... Chimney Rock... Chimney Rock...
[Narrator]
Chimney Rock was the most the most famous landmark on the Oregon, California, and Mormon Trails. A century and a half ago, travelers made note of it in their dairies.
[Voice of: Elizabeth Dixon Smith Geer, 1847]
Saw Chimney Rock. It is a curiosity indeed. A rock, or rather a hard clay, standing alone.
[Voice of: Phoebe Godall Judson, 1853]
The landmarks indicated our progress and helped to break the monotony. Like the milestones along the journey of life, there was one less to pass.
[SONG: GET UP ON THE WAGON, HONEY]
Get up on the wagon, Honey
Saw the team and spent the money
Get up on the wagon, Honey
‘Cause we’re never lookin’ back
Ahead of us is Oregon
Behind us is the rising sun
We’re headed out for Oregon
And never lookin’ back.
[Judy Durnal]
And whether it was coming up the Oregon Trail, you know, behind a wagon, if your husband died or your breadwinner died you had to feed those children. And there’s other people that helped you but it was up to you. You know. So when the blood’s that tough coming, you know, there’s still some more left and it doesn’t make any difference if you don’t have a covered wagon any more.
[SONG]
Hold tight the wagon, Baby
Leavin’ now or sooner, maybe
Hold tight the wagon, Baby
‘Cause we’re never lookin’ back.
