The
1960 Band Day
Band Day
was an enduring tradition that began in 1924 as a way to help fill the
seats in a new football stadium. High school bands, municipal bands
and even the Burlington Railroad Band were invited to perform. Three
years later, John Philip Sousa used the term when he invited 15 school
bands to play with him in concert in Lincon.
Gradually
the practice grew until, in the 1960s, up to 3,600 high school musicians
filled the Memorial Stadium field. [Note that this is a silent movie.]
