Sudan had been embroiled in a brutal 20-year civil war between the primarily Muslim north and the Christian and Animist south when, in 2004, the two sides reached a peace agreement. However, the celebration of the peace agreement was overshadowed by reports coming out of the Sudanese province of western Darfur that atrocities were being committed against civilians by government-backed militias.
Since that time,
those reports have become clearer and more shocking.
