Optical Chronicle III
August 14, 2018 – April 21, 2019
Author Henry M. Sayre in his book A World of Art discusses the various roles of the artist in society. He identifies four roles; the third is how artists make a visual record of the people, places, and events of their time and place. These identified roles provide the viewer with a touchstone through which they can then begin to interpret the work. This exhibition is the third in a series of four exhibitions, each dedicated to one of Sayre’s four guiding principles.

The exhibition at the LUX Center is as much a curatorial project as a presentation of new paintings. The title, “A Sidelong Glance” alludes to those parts of my studio practice that appear along the outer edge of my work space. Among these include arrangements of color, a table of found objects, collages made from painting stencils and an assortment of photographs, all of which co–exist with more traditional painting. As by–products of painting, the works in this show are seldom seen in public, but they are items that I interact with...

The family farm lies at the heart of our national identity, and yet its future is in peril. Rick Hammond grew up on a farm, and for forty years he has raised cattle and crops on his wife’s fifth-generation homestead in Nebraska, in hopes of passing it on to their four children.
