About the exhibit
Batik is an ancient decorative art used to embellish textiles. The textiles or paper is immersed in a dye bath. Wax is applied to preserve the color. This process is repeated many times creating additional color combinations and detail. In the end, the wax is removed revealing the finished art. The process may appear limiting but within those limitations are limitless possibilities. Often like life itself, the very process requires a give and take and a relinquishing to the results without an attachment to the outcome....

Compelled To Tell: Markmaking
May 22 – September 23, 2018
This new series of overarching-themed exhibitions explores how artists are compelled to articulate humankind’s living presence. The instinct to create is truly a significant narrative. Advancements, memories, and beauty are conveyed in the form of interpretations that are passed on from generation to generation, and artworks signify who we are. The first exhibition in the series surveys the limitless variety of individual marks made by the vitality of the human eye, mind, and hand.

Spotlight On: Olga Stepanek
July 31 – November 4, 2018
Olga Stepanek, a late-in-life artist with no formal artistic education, found inspiration in places she visited and the books she read. An experimental artist, she utilized objects deemed worthless and without any further use. In her life time, Stepanek created over 1,500 metal collages, and several fabric pieces, and 275 metal cubes. Because she wanted art to be affordable for everyone, she priced her works inexpensively, which was possible in her case since she paid nearly nothing for...

Optical Chronicle III
August 14, 2018 – April 21, 2019
Author Henry M. Sayre in his book A World of Art discusses the various roles of the artist in society. He identifies four roles; the third is how artists make a visual record of the people, places, and events of their time and place. These identified roles provide the viewer with a touchstone through which they can then begin to interpret the work. This exhibition is the third in a series of four exhibitions, each dedicated to one of Sayre’s four guiding principles.
