Homeless in Nebraska
NET Shines Light on Homelessness
Having enough to eat. Living in a safe place. Sleeping in a warm bed. These are just a few things that most of us take for granted each day – but what happens when someone doesn’t have access to the necessities we consider to be so basic?
|During one of the coldest months of the year, NET is examining homelessness in Nebraska and the men, women and children – even entire families – who have no place to call home. NET News and NET Learning Services are teaming up on this initiative, Homeless in Nebraska, which includes a series of news reports, a television panel discussion, and more.|
Topics of NET News Signature Stories include: the role mental illness plays in homelessness; the situation in both rural and urban areas of the state; homelessness and legal issues; legislative efforts to ease the problem; and the challenges teachers and schools experience to educate homeless students.
Studies show that without proper support and access to life-changing programs and opportunities, children living in poverty may struggle their entire school careers, falling dangerously behind their more affluent peers. On NET Television, a panel discussion, Educating the Homeless in Nebraska focused exclusively on education and homelessness.
