NET Shines Light on Homelessness

Having enough to eat. Living in a safe place. Sleeping in a warm bed. These are just a few things that most of us take for granted each day – but what happens when someone doesn’t have access to the necessities we consider to be so basic?

During one of the coldest months of the year, NET is examining homelessness in Nebraska and the men, women and children – even entire families – who have no place to call home. NET News and NET Learning Services are teaming up on this initiative, Homeless in Nebraska, which includes a series of news reports, a television panel discussion, and more.

Mental illness and homelessness

Topics of NET News Signature Stories include: the role mental illness plays in homelessness; the situation in both rural and urban areas of the state; homelessness and legal issues; legislative efforts to ease the problem; and the challenges teachers and schools experience to educate homeless students.

Studies show that without proper support and access to life-changing programs and opportunities, children living in poverty may struggle their entire school careers, falling dangerously behind their more affluent peers. On NET Television, a panel discussion, Educating the Homeless in Nebraska focused exclusively on education and homelessness.
