A top infectious disease expert in Nebraska says the priority groups for COVID-19 vaccine aren’t as important as getting the vaccine to as many people as possible.

The state recently expanded its priority group to include people over age 65.

Nebraska has done better than most states with about 50% of available vaccines already administered.

But Dr. James Lawler of the University of Nebraska Medical Center says we could be doing more.

"I think the worst thing we can do, in my opinion, is at the end of the day if we haven’t given every dose of vaccine we have on the shelf, I think that’s a mistake," Lawler said.

Hear more from Dr. Lawler about COVID-19 in the state on this week’s episode of Speaking of Nebraska.

Dr. Lawler is joined by Dr. Bob Rauner of Lincoln and Leslie Marsh, CEO of Lexington Regional Health Center.
