Face coverings will be encouraged, but not required, at the Nebraska State Fair this year. The modified event is scheduled to begin August 28.

Fair Board President Beth Smith says safety is the top priority.

"We know we can have a safe event," Smith said. "Please know that we will be abiding by the protocols set up by the Central District Health Department and we will adapt our events to whatever phase Hall County is in during the fair."

Free disposable masks will be handed out, and hand sanitizer and warm water hand washing stations will be set up throughout the fairgrounds.

"We also will have significant signage to politely and proactively remind people to use common sense," said executive director Bill Ogg.

Many regular fair events are cancelled this year, including large concerts. Ogg says several bands have agreed to perform for free.

Fair officials have not confirmed whether carnival rides will be offered, but they’re not currently on the fair’s online schedule.
