DMV Sees Surge Ahead of August 31st Renewal Deadline

Nebraska’s Department of Motor Vehicles offices have seen an influx of visitors the past several weeks.

Renewal requirements for driver’s licenses and vehicle registrations were temporarily suspended this spring due to the pandemic. That suspension has been lifted and expired licenses or registrations must be renewed by August 31.

DMV offices reopened for more in-person services in June. The DMV say despite only being open for half the month, they conducted 30% more driving tests in June compared to this month last year.

"Early on we asked people to go online, that there were a lot of things they could do online," said DMV director Rhonda Lahm said. "We have a very very large suite of online services. And if they can go online we ask them to do that and we’ve seen over 50% increase for online renewal for driver’s licenses."

Lahm added if you do need to go in-person to the DMV, you can check what paperwork to bring through the DMV’s website.
