Cannabis Testing Laboratories, located at Doane University in Crete, has opened its doors, becoming the state’s first ISO certified cannabis lab.

Lab director Arin Sutlief said the lab will follow quality standards set by the International Standards Organization. Nebraska’s Department of Agriculture requires the certification for any lab in the state that tests cannabis.

"It’s a pretty prestigious certification," Sutlief said. "We have to have it be within this high standard, and it really helps regulate all of the facilities, so that they function reliably."

Andrea Holmes, director of Doane’s Cannabis Studies program, said having a certified in-state testing facility is important for hemp farmers and product developers.

The legality of hemp in Nebraska relies on a batch’s THC concentration; any hemp that exceeds a 0.3% THC level is considered marijuana and can’t be sold.

Holmes said having a test facility in Nebraska will make turnaround time quicker. Holmes said the new lab will help set statewide testing standards for hemp, one of Nebraska’s emerging industries.

"And to be the first business that’s in testing, it’s going to set precedents and set the stage for biotechnology that is evolving, for increased professionalism, for training opportunities," Holmes said.

Though the lab functions independently from the university, Holmes said Doane students will have hands-on learning, research, and internship opportunities to accompany cannabis studies classes.
