The U.S. House passed the ‘George Floyd’ Justice in Policing Act Thursday night. Nebraska's three Representatives, all Republicans, voted against the Democratic measure.
Rep. Don Bacon (2nd District) said although he agreed with about 70 to 80 percent of the bill, he thought part of it would not be in the best interest of the police.
"The area that I thought was the worst part of that bill was the removal of the immunity for our law enforcement," Bacon said. "I don’t think you can attract good law enforcement people if they know they are going to be under threat of lawsuits for just typical things like pulling people over, they deserve to have that protection."
Bacon said he came to this conclusion in part from talking with the Omaha Police Department.
Only three Republicans voted in favor of the measure.
NPR reports Democrats developed their bill without GOP input: "Without any efforts to work on a bipartisan compromise the issue is likely stalled, potentially until after the fall election."
