The Better Business Bureau is warning residents to be vigilant against COVID-19-related scams.

Tami Barrett, Lincoln Branch Manager, said the BBB has seen six main scams, many of which have to do with stimulus checks or individuals posing as government officials to steal financial or personal information.

“People are getting text messages saying they’re from the U.S. Treasury, or from the IRS, they’re impersonating the government in a variety of departments,” Barrett said.

Barrett said there are new scams in which scammers impersonate contact tracers and send out fake stimulus checks to steal money and other information. She said if you believe you have been scammed, report it to the BBB and Federal Trade Commission, and to the police if any money was stolen.
