Dakota County confirmed 361 new cases of COVID-19 Friday, a huge increase in one of the state’s most-impacted areas.

There are now more than 1,400 cases in the rural county — that’s about 7% of the total population.

South Sioux City Administrator Lance Headquist says there have been several large testing events in the area in the past few days.

"The big question now is to see [if] it starts to drop," Headquist said. "I think we’ve covered most of the major cases in the area. And so I think we’ll see the numbers should be reduced in the future."

Hundreds of workers at the Tyson beef plant in Dakota City have tested positive, according to the Sioux City Journal. Nebraska officials say at least 1,104 food processing workers in the state have contracted the disease, and at least three have died.
