Grand Island officials say Nebraska’s coronavirus hotspot is going to get worse over the next couple of weeks.

Grand Island is reporting between 50-65 new cases of COVID-19 daily, Central Health District health director Teresa Anderson said Monday.

“We need you to very clearly understand that we’re going into what I would call ‘a rather dark couple of weeks,'" she said. "The number of cases will continue to climb, and unfortunately, we will see additional deaths related to the COVID virus.”

The Central Health District, which covers Hall, Hamilton and Merrick counties, reported 491 cases of COVID-19 and eight deaths as of last Friday. The Grand Island area, Anderson said, still has the power to slow the spread using social distancing.

The health district will bring on more employees to analyze data and track cases, according to Anderson, which she will present on Thursday during a live-streamed press briefing.
