EU's Importance to Nebraska Grows

November 13, 2019 - 2:01pm

Governor Pete Ricketts emphasized the European Union’s importance to Nebraska’s economy Wednesday.

Ricketts and other Nebraskans are halfway through a trade mission in Germany to build relationships with German companies. The EU is Nebraska’s fourth biggest market, with lots of soybean and beef exports, totaling $367.4 million in 2018.

“As China has fallen down in the ranks," Ricketts said, "the European Union has stepped up in the ranks and now they’re only behind Japan, Mexico and South Korea as our top destination for agricultural exports at over $500 million in 2018.”

Ricketts said he will be promoting Nebraska beef on Friday, which will have a greater importance in the EU because the Trump administration signed a trade deal raising the quota of beef exported to the EU in early August. US beef exports to the EU are expected to triple starting January.
