Poultry Company Denied Request to Build

A Costco-affiliated poultry company has been denied its permit request to build a chicken farm in north Lancaster County.

The Lancaster County Board of Commissioners voted 3-2 Thursday against a special permit request for a 380,000 bird chicken farm.

“Obviously, this is a community that’s not ready for a CAFO that close to their school,” Rick Vest, district five commissioner of Lancaster County, said.

Vest joined commissioners Christa Yoakum and Sean Flowerday in opposition to the poultry company’s request for environmental and community concerns.

The farm would have been just over a mile north of Raymond Central junior-senior high school, and Vest said the poultry farmers lacked community support.

Sunset Poultry’s permit request came to the Lancaster County Commissioners after it received approval from the Lincoln-Lancaster County Planning Commission on October 2. Poultry opponents can either fight the decision in court, or reformulate their proposal and try again, Vest said.
