A former Naval Academy superintendent has been named the top candidate for the University of Nebraska’s presidency.

The University of Nebraska Board of Regents and the 23-person search committee selected Walter Carter Jr., a retired naval vice admiral, to be the university's next president Friday. Carter will replace interim president Susan Fritz following approval from the regents.

“The Board of Regents did a great job, and we should all be thrilled to welcome the Admiral to his new home," U.S. Senator Ben Sasse said in a statement. "He’s had a distinguished career and Nebraskans should be excited about him leading our state’s biggest and most influential institution."

Senator Deb Fischer also praised the choice. "Our state has a time-honored tradition of providing America’s future leaders with quality educations, and I look forward to working together to continue the advancement of our exceptional university,” Fischer said in a statement.

Carter served as both the superintendent of the U.S. Naval Academy and the president of the U.S. Naval War College before being named the University of Nebraska's president, pending approval. He begins 30 days of public review following Friday's announcement. The Board of Regents will vote on Carter’s confirmation after the public review.
