More than half of the beds at the new Central Nebraska Veterans' Home in Kearney, Nebraska are occupied just six months after opening.

Alex Willford, Central Nebraska Veterans' Home administrator, said the facility has done well since moving from Grand Island to Kearney on January 16.

“We’re pretty well through the transition," Willford said. "We’ve been here 6 months and there’s not really much of a transition left. We’re moving forward and things are going well.”

At last check, the central location has 140 occupied beds of the 225 total beds, making the new location the largest veterans' home in Nebraska. Other locations include Norfolk Veterans' Home, an Eastern location in Bellevue and a Western location in Scottsbluff. Willford said new private rooms have been a huge draw for veterans.

“That is a huge, huge benefit to the members," Willford said. "When people tour, they’re very, very impressed with the facility.”

The private rooms have a personal bathroom and shower. The new Kearney facility also has 18 rooms for couples.
