A new flu index that tracks retail prescription data from Walgreens has Nebraska as the number one state in the country for flu activity for the week ending on January 26.

The Walgreens Flu Index lists Nebraska as the top state in flu activity for the second week in a row. The index shows the Lincoln/Hastings/Kearney area as being the top region in the country for the flu, while the Omaha area occupies the fourth spot.

Dr. Tom Safranek, an infectious disease specialist based in Lincoln, said he’s unsure of the soundness of measuring prescription data as a methodology for tracking flu activity. However, he said there’s no question the flu season in Nebraska is still in full force.

“We believe right now we’re having a very significant influenza season," Safranek said. "It hasn’t peaked yet. We still recommend individuals get the vaccine, which is the best way to reduce your chances of getting influenza.”

Safranek said Tamiflu, the most popular prescription drug for the flu, is another good option for prevention and treatment.
