UNL To Celebrate National First Gen Day

November 7, 2018 - 3:59pm

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln is celebrating national First Gen Day in honor of first-generation college students. UNL is one of many campuses across the country to host a First Gen Day.

Students and the public can visit a booth in the city campus union from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday (Nov. 8) to learn about first-gen students and their stories. UNL has more than 6,000 first-generation students enrolled on campus.

Ashlee Young, one of the primary coordinators of the event, said it’s important to celebrate the successes of first-generation students.

“But we want to focus, we want to celebrate first-gen students because we’re excited they’re here," Young said. "The ripple effect for first-gen students is huge, and when I say ripple effect what I mean is the idea that for first-gen students, the impact of getting a college education not only impacts their lives, but it affects their family, it affects their community, because of what they are able to bring back.”

One of the activities will include a postcard station where students can write parents, family and friends thanking them for supporting them in their education.
