UNMC Student Organization to Host Annual Refugee Health Fair

A health fair aimed at refugees from Africa and Asia will be provided by the University of Nebraska Medical Center this Saturday.

The annual Refugee Health Fair, hosted by UNMC student-led organization Bridge to Care, will be held at Benson High School from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to provide flu shots, vision checkups and more for refugees in the Omaha area. Over 300 refugees from countries like Sudan, Somalia, Vietnam and others are expected to attend.

Dr. Drissa Toure, the community clinical research coordinator at UNMC and director of Bridge to Care, said the health fair is perfect for refugees looking for a free one-stop shop for a variety of health checkups.

"Just one trip - you come that day and you have all of the services available to you," Toure said. "[It] makes it easier for them."

Along with other health organizations with UNMC, there will also be 30 different community vendors at the health fair helping to provide services and information.
