Pedestrian Fatalities on Roadways in Nebraska on the Rise

2018 is proving to be a more deadly year for pedestrians in Nebraska. For the last 17 years, there’s been an average of 11 pedestrian deaths on Nebraska roadways. There have already been 16 pedestrian deaths so far in 2018.

That is a 33-percent increase from last year and a 54-percent increase from the previous five years.

Rose White of AAA in Nebraska said the increasing deaths and injuries are a big issue for the state.

“Being more cautious and just being aware of the dangers. Because not only have we had an increase in fatalities, but there are typically about 400 people who are injured each year in pedestrian-car crashes," White said. "So, unfortunately, the numbers are high and for that reason, we do ask all people to be on alert, and look for pedestrians in the traffic mix.”

Roadway accidents can be caused by a number of factors, but drivers and those walking are encouraged to limit distractions and pay attention to their surroundings when driving or crossing streets.
