A candlelight vigil will be held Friday, August 31, at the Nebraska State Capitol in recognition of international overdose awareness day. This event is put on by the Division of Behavioral Health’s Office of Consumer Affairs in the Department of Health and Human Services.

September is also known as recovery month. According to data provided by the Department of Health and Human Services, an estimated 140,000 Nebraskans suffer from substance use disorders.

Office of Consumer Affairs administrator Brenda Moes said this event is important to show support to those who are affected by substance abuse.

“It would be great if people feel supported. People understand the importance that we come together, that we support one another, in this journey, and that people don’t have to do this alone. People can and do recover,” Moes said.

Moes also said the support of local providers helping patients and victims of substance use disorders is crucial towards deterring those issues in our communities around the state.

Attendees are encouraged to bring photos of loved ones to decorate luminaries for the vigil. The vigil will be held on the North Plaza of the Nebraska State Capitol Friday evening, starting at 7 p.m. Central.
