Individuals in central Nebraska have joined together to hold a variety of rallies protesting the separation of families. These “Families Belong Together” events will take place in Hastings, Grand Island, Lexington and Kearney on Sunday, June 24th.

Executive Director of the Trinidad Center in Lexington, Gladys Godinez, organized the four communities to come together, wanting to show support from central Nebraska. She believes these events are crucial toward speaking out against the separation of families.

“It is very important for us to be able to speak out against it. Nebraska is a conservative state, but I don’t believe Nebraska is an inhumane state, or that we don’t value families. So I think Nebraska can stand up against this current treatment of children that is happening at the border,” Godinez said.

Volunteer Director of the event in Kearney, Ashley Weets, said she wanted to help because she feels it represents the true values of Nebraska.

“The main message is that we feel through our Nebraska family values, is that we value families being together. That the separation of children from their parents is a very strong statement that has been set forward, and we’re just saying we disagree,” Weets said.

The events will be held from 6:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. Sunday evening in all four locations. The public is encouraged to come and show their support towards the issue of separating families.
