The state has granted the Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality $1.59 million to support 106 different tire recycling and cleanup projects across the state.
The grant supports local efforts to clean up tire piles and conduct community scrap tire collections. In addition, schools and other organizations across the state will use funds to receive partial reimbursement for playground mulch, synthetic turf fields, running tracks and other recycled rubber products made from scrap tires.
Director Jim Macy said the funds will help local efforts effectively deal with scrap tires in the state.
