The University of Nebraska Lincoln has hired a new athletic director, less than four weeks after firing Shawn Eichorst on September 21st. The new head of Nebraska athletics has spent most of his career building programs in the northwestern part of the U.S.

The University of Nebraska Lincoln has hired Bill Moos as its next athletic director.

Moos is giving up his job as athletic director at Washington State University to take over the same role at UNL. He has been the A.D. at Washington State in Pullman since 2010. Before that he was athletic director at Oregon from 1995-2007.

Moos grew up in Washington and says Nebraska reminds him of home.

“I feel like Eastern Washington is so much like the state of Nebraska,” Moos said at a Sunday news conference in Memorial Stadium. “Good wholesome people with a great work ethic. Love athletics and really love football.”

Moos, 66, says he has spent most of his career building programs without the finances and facilities of UNL’s athletic department. He says his goal is for the resources behind Nebraska athletics to show in the level of competitiveness.

“I told the coaches and staff that my expectation is we should be in a position in every sport to compete for championships,” Moos said.

Moos was asked about the status of head football coach, Mike Riley, whose team struggled in lopsided loses against Wisconsin and Ohio State the last two weeks. Moos is familiar with Riley from his coaching tenure at Oregon State.

“As we speak right now he’s my football coach and I’m going to support him and certainly hope for some victories here toward the latter part of the season,” Moos said.

Lack of competitiveness was the reason given by UNL Chancellor Ronnie Green and University of Nebraska President Hank Bounds for the firing of Shawn Eichorst in September. Green says Moos has had success making programs competitive in previous jobs.

“Bill comes with a reputation for excellence, comes with a reputation for competitiveness, comes with a reputation for balance in an athletics program from his tenure at Washington State, from his tenure at the University of Oregon, from his tenure at the University of Montana,” Green said

Moos has a 5-year contract at Nebraska. His base pay is $1 million.
